Quebec just passed Bill 64 and the first stage comes into force this September. Most of you think “That’s Quebec, what does it have to do with me?”. If you operate across Canada, chances are 25% of your database consists of Quebec residents. So Bill 64 applies. And Bill 64 says in order to use an individual’s personal information you must have a contract or meaningful consent. The Privacy Commissioner states that 72% of Canadians do not trust businesses with their personal data. Is this a perfect storm for marketers? They need consent, but consumers do not want to give it.
